Social Impact of IT

Since the introduction of computers there has been an increase in *Copyright*.
Copyright is when you use another person’s work without asking.

The Copyright law (Copyright, Designs and Patients Act 1998) was created to give certain legal protection to authors of materials. It is used to give protection to the copyright holder and also to reward them if someone tries to use their work e.g. image. It was originally intended for things like books, music and photographs but over the years it has developed and is now used to also protect movies, jewelry cloths etc. Schools and Colleges are allowed to copy 1% of published work.

The items, software, music etc covered by the copy right law are listed below:-

Literacy works- An example of a literacy work would be anything to do with words e.g. books, brochures, pamphlets and speeches. Games, automated databases and certain computer programs are also listed in the literacy works.

Musical works- An example of a musical work would be something like an album, a song, a backing track etc. Even recording somebody singing can be classed as a copyright.

Dramatic works- Dramatic works is something like a play e.g. Macbeth.
